“The great drum instructor Barry James, who teaches in Orlando FL, was a
student of George Lawrence Stone - as was I. Barry still teaches Mr. Stone’s
classic method. Any percussion student who wants to improve his or her
technique and musicianship should study with Barry” - Vic Firth
“Our son Steven studied drums with Barry James for six years during Middle
School and High School. He was recently awarded a full scholarship to the
University of Miami where he will major in Music Performance. Thank you, Mr.
James. We honestly believe your wonderful teaching method was the reason
Steven excelled in his audition and won this scholarship.”
- Alan & Cathy Turner
Mr. James, I just wanted you to know that David has been promoted and is
now the first percussionist in the Marine Corp. Band in Washington. He
speaks of you often and will be calling you to set up a few master classes with
you on his next trip home. Thanks so much for all you have done for him.”
- Dave Greene
Dear Mr. James, I remember fondly my years of lessons with you in Boston. I
owe my career to your diligence and your patience with me as I tried to master
the techniques that you taught so expertly. I’m now busy performing in
several Broadway shows. I owe much of my success to you.”
- Eric Singer
“Barry James has a very open mind. He hears and feels a lot of things that are
beyond the limits of traditional music education - as that term has been
conventionally used. Also, he’s a very warm person - direct and candid - and
that comes through in his playing and his teaching.” - Bill White
“Barry James is an exceptional drummer and teacher. Some drummers have
it, and some don’t. Barry’s got it!” - Joe Morello
The following is an excerpt from an article by world renowned drummer Danny
Gottlieb in Drum Magazine’s June 2011 “A Tribute to Joe Morello,” discussing the
famous drum techniques first taught by George L. Stone, who taught both Joe
Morello and Barry James, and now with the passing of Mr. Morello is
exclusively being taught by Mr. James:
“As students we were especially fortunate to benefit from a deep connection
that Joe Morello had to “Stick Control” author George Lawrence Stone. The
techniques that Mr. Stone taught allow for incredible dynamic control without
tension and is a system, if practiced correctly, that offers unlimited
possibilities for the student as well as the professional drummer....One crucial
new addition to the study of Mr. Stone’s methods is a book by a student of
both Joe’s and Mr. Stone’s, named Barry James. Barry had studied for four
years with Mr. Stone, and the idea with his book is to present modern
rudiments the way Mr. Stone would have taught them....Joe and Barry
discussed what the title might be, and Joe suggested “Stick Control 2.”
While purists might argue with this title, it is certainly the only book
that could be legitimately be viewed as “Volume 2.”
